Regaining your work confidence post baby.
Like most things you stop doing for a year, going back to work can be extremely daunting post baby. You’ve spent the past year in a baby bubble of coffee mornings, sing along classes, projectile shits and baby tv. Of course you may have kept yourself stimulated in other ways but lets be honest the main focus has been keeping the unformed mammal you just birthed alive. Most peoples confidence takes a nose dive as you deal with your new life, new body and new routine (the f***ing routines) and whilst work can be a welcomed release it doesn’t mean it won’t feel nerve wracking. Here are some tips we’ve learnt or picked up when speaking to our working mums on how they regained confidence and prepped themselves for work again.
WRITE DOWN ALL OF YOUR SUCCESSES.
Get out your notebook and make a list of all the things you have down in your career to date. Education, internships, Coffee’s you made the big dogs, write it down. Show yourself how much you’ve done. Remind yourself how amazing you are.
RECONNECT WITH OLD FRIENDS & COLLEGES
People are a lot nicer in real life then they are in your head, trust us. Drop your pre baby mates a message and go for a coffee with them. Some of them will have done what you are about to do, and will be more than happy to give you any advice. Others won’t have but will also inspire you and remind you of work life.
UPDATE YOUR WORK WARDROBE
No one, NO ONE can see the size label except you. We know it stings going up a size but you’ll be back to your own self soon enough for now stop giving yourself and that invisazip a hard time and buy yourself some new clothes.
GET TO GRIPS WITH FLEXIBILITY
You’ve spent the last year doing this so you’ll be good at it, but colleges may not. Kids get sick a lot, and you may be needed at home and when we are needed, we gotta go. Many places offer flexibility for working mothers so speak to your boss. (Mother_Pukka runs a great campaign on flexible working check it our for advice) Also make sure you discuss this with your partner, nursery, child minder, grand parent (whoever!) so you have plans in pace for an emergency if you can’t get out. It takes a village, talk to yours.
TRY SOMETHING NEW
Whether its a new work out class, an event (HELLO TMC) or a craft activity. Lets get your confidence back by doing something ut of your comfort zone that isn’t work. It’ll help trust us- in fact we know SO many women that attending TMC breakfast has help with pre for work. But then we would say that…;)
GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK
You had a baby. You HAD A BABY. You can do anything. Nothing is as hard as birthing a baby. Sorry, tis not. Take your time. It’ll come back to you.
