Rain Rain, f*** off
Being pregnant during the winter months to us is heaven. Dark evenings, cold nights every single reason to put on our pjs at 4pm and stay in. Not an ounce of FOMO, we can sip decaf gingerbread lattes around a fire and get the same thrills without having to worry about freezing our tits off outside of a club, or worrying about how our hair turning to frizz en route! No, being pregnant in the winter is a dream. What however is less dreamy is entertaining kids in these wet months.
Sure we, like most love a home day. A day with dvds, cuddles, toys and pjs. BUT what if it rains ALL week, all month, all bloody winter? We end up climbing the walls in search for our sanity. That jumperoo that saves your life daily suddenly becomes the reason you want to end it.
So what can we do to save ourselves..
Ok so we know we have a kettle, and yes we've bought a fancy Nespresso coffee machine which really covers all our caffeine needs. But without coffee there is little purpose. Coffee gives us reason to leave the house. Coffee with your friends gives reason to socialise. Going for a coffee gives you a way of interacting with another adult, even if it is just to quote your quadruple shot sugar filled latte and hand over your life savings daily! Coffee saves lives.
When you've exhausted every coffee house in the area, and your child is getting to the age where they don't want to sit politely and let you sip a hot beverage whislt deep in adult chat. Its about time you start looking into kids clubs. No, your child does not NEED these so don't fool yourself. BUT it will give you an hour off and allow someone else other than charlie and the numbers to entertain your babe.
There really is no other sport that tires them out so young. Which is GREAT for bedtime. This might already be one of your clubs but if it isn't we recommend taking the kids for a half an hour swim at the local pool. Sure, no sane adult likes a swimming baths and don't even get us started on the changing rooms. BUT it will kill an hour or 2 and noon will care what the weathers doing outside.
We love a playdate likely due to the fact that us mums aren't actually paying attention to what your kids are doing (no one’s crying sooo…) because you’re too busy discussing everything from life altering decisions to the daily gossip grind.
If there is a god we think they probably come in the form of women like Claire Russell, who set up Play hooray a business that shares daily play ideas for babies, toddlers and children. Their playPROMPT activity cards will keep your kids entertained for hours, giving you ideas using every day ideas for them to play with. WE LOVE YOU CLAIRE.
Lastly, which should probably be tackled first if we start to feel a little bit cabin fever we ALWAYS GO OUT. We wrap up, rain cover the life out of every child, chuck on the wellies and go. It will be a major hassle, it may not be that enjoyable but it will be totally worth it. Because even if its just a quick pop round the shops and you get completely drenched from the AR@£HOLE lorry driver, you'll come home knowing the cabin fever is your best bet for the day!
