The Mum Club Featuring JOMI London

JOMI is a character based clothing label launched in London, designed for the little people in our lives . It all started back in the ‘80s when contemporary artist Joanna Bailey would print her little characters onto t-shirts for her son and friends’ children to wear at play dates. Fast forward a few decades and JOMI was born. The kids, now adults, have decided to share their memories by reviving those characters from childhood, making them available to little ones everywhere. The ten-piece collection is created from soft cotton for ultimate comfort and screen printed with water-based neon dyes – all child friendly.

MY NAME IS …  Gabriella Mendy

MY BRAND IS… JOMI – the character based kidswear brand with pops of neon, for little ones aged 0-5.

I LIVE IN… London - but my heart lives in Cyprus!

I FEEL MOST AT HOME… when my big Greek family comes together for dinner and we just lose track of time!

I AM A MUM … a wife, a twin, a business owner and a bridal stylist.

THINGS THAT KEEP ME AWAKE AT NIGHT… are the constant feeding demands from my 3 month old girl! Power naps in the day are my saving grace, along with eye drops preventing my eyes from twitching…

WHEN I GREW UP I WANTED TO BE… an actress, but that was short lived.

MY FIRST STEPS TAKEN TO START MY BRAND WERE... a lot of RESEARCH into what’s out there and assessing whether there is a gap in the market for a brand like JOMI. The next step was to find out whether there was an appetite and that took the shape of small focus groups with mums and mums to be. Having the passion and drive is one thing, but if you don’t see a need and get a sense an excitement for your brand, then it’s probably best to go back to the drawing board.

THE HARDEST PART OF MOTHERHOOD IS… the realisation that it not about me anymore, and that I should have never taken for granted the simplest of tasks - like being able to have a bath! In hindsight, I should have taken a bath every day leading up to my due date!

THIS KEEPS ME SANE...my husband, mother, Netflix and exercise.

I COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT (PHYSICAL OBJECT)... my red lipstick (yes I wear it in the house!), my oversized Isabel Marant cardigan and iPhone.

MY BIGGEST RISK....starting my own business.

MY BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT... my labour preparation - breathing techniques, meditation and visualisation which helped to bring my beautiful baby girl to this world after a four hour labour and a water birthing pool.

MY BEST PIECE OF ADVICE… no pain no gain and always follow your gut – as cliché as that may sound!

AND LASTLY A PERSONAL ONE! I WOULD HAVE DONE THIS DIFFERENTLY IN MY LABOUR… I would have not done anything different! My labour was extremely magical and I was very much in control, to this day I still thank the universe for giving me what I wanted.
