My Twirl are the perfect play ground to party dresses. These stylish yet comfortable dresses are deigned by Amanda's Mum in New York who has also designed for the likes of Calvin Klein childrenswear collections. These beautiful high quality dresses are the ideal addition to any little princesses wardrobe.

MY NAME IS …  Amanda de Vaulx

MY BRAND IS… MyTwirl, for girls who twirl from playground to party!

CAN YOU DESCRIBE IT IN ONE SENTENCE… MyTwirl creates gorgeous twirling play and party dresses in luxurious, machine washable fabrics - bridging the gap between what girls want to wear and what mums want them to wear!

I FEEL MOST AT HOME… in NYC, my hometown.  Driving towards NYC's skyline, on the ride form JFK airport to Manhattan, gets me every time.  My heart skips a beat, I know I’m home.

I AM A MUM of 3 AND… Co-Founder, Designer, Head of Sourcing, Production, Marketing, Sales, PR, Logistics and an amateur chef… although all of my other jobs keep me from having the time to play around in my kitchen.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU HAVE FACED AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT… My first child was born 6 weeks early with a congenital birth defect that was one of the only things undetectable in the womb.  We were shocked, scared and uneducated on his very rare condition.  Even his doctors saw maybe 1 case every 2 years, which was even more terrifying.  I felt like they were telling me the same things I was reading, straight off google.  I spent 4 weeks at the NICU for as many hours as they would let me, watching my little 5lb bubba go though 3 major operations starting at 12 hours old.  I questioned everything, researched, waited, prayed and cried - just wanting to hold my baby and to experience this magical connection with my son that I had dreamed about.  But I had to be content with holding his little hand through a cot.  To be honest, it’s a bit of a blur now and I don’t know exactly how I overcame it, but something kicked in and I ran on autopilot, with little sleep and food, doing everything I could for him.  I set my alarm for every 3 hours to pump my breastmilk and freeze it - saving up for the day when he would be allowed to eat, anything I could do to feel like a mother and help him.  It could have been hard on my relationship with my husband but we supported each other as best we could and accepted all of the highs and lows it would bring us.  I had friends and family on rotation, checking in on us and forcing me to take a break.  And in the end, the strength that I saw in my little baby made me stronger. That was the magic.  It wasn’t the way I pictured it would be, but my little fighter (who is now an incredibly healthy, happy and sporty 8 year old boy) showed me that I was able to go on and to care for him and to be his advocate in the hospitals and to believe that he was going to overcome all of his challenges.  He continues to amaze me and teach me with his wisdom and strength today.  I look at him now and feel so lucky to be his mother.

WHEN I GREW UP I WANTED TO BE… The US Ambassador to Spain. I studied International Relations and Spanish Literature at The College of William & Mary in Virginia, USA…but with 2 clothing designer parents it was next to impossible to escape the fashion industry!  I still try to use my language skills with our fabric suppliers in Europe.  Gracias.

MY FIRST STEPS TAKEN TO START MY BRAND WHERE… Once my friend and neighbour Lisa and I decided we wanted to move ahead with the brand, we approached my mum.  I spent my career in fashion trend forecasting and Lisa was a corporate lawyer, so we needed someone with the technical design knowledge.  My mum started the Calvin Klein childrenswear collection when I was a toddler and has worked as a fashion designer her entire life.  We shared the concept and design ideas, and she came up with the first prototypes that were sent over from New York. My daughter tried them on, twirled around, squealed with excitement and said, “I love this dress!!!”.  We knew we had to start MyTwirl!  My mum, Celeste, works with us on design concepts, sketches and makes our first patterns and samples. Our biggest challenge was to research fabric suppliers, production, distribution, and all the rest.  It’s not easy when you’re a small brand producing small quantities.  But we have found wonderful fabric mills in Spain and Italy as well as a small manufacturing unit in Europe, with a group of lovely ladies making our dresses to an incredibly high level of quality.  Beautiful fabrics and incredible quality are the cornerstone of our brand - with a perfect twirl of course!

HOW DID YOU FUND YOUR START UP… Lisa and I have invested our own money to get MyTwirl started.  We wanted to be in 100% in control of the business.  But after preparing our business plan, we agreed to put a cap on our investment, and are soon at a point where the business will need to fund itself. Eventually we will be looking for outside funding, which will be the only way to scale and grow the MyTwirl brand.

HOW DO YOU WORK AROUND YOUR CHILDREN… I’m very fortunate that my business partner is my next door neighbour (also with 3 kids) and my intern is my former au pair!  Between the 3 of us we juggle work, school runs and childcare.  We have keys to each other’s homes and our kids all get along and often have meals together while the other is at a trade show or visiting the manufacturer!  It’s a unique situation, but it works.  At this point, I should also give a shout out to our husbands who have taken on a LOT of weekend childcare.  I think he’s banking weekends for a big kitesurfing trip somewhere...

THIS KEEPS ME SANE… My girlfriends.  I love time with my husband and family, but there’s something about time alone with my girlfriends, knowing there’s no judgement and we all completely get each other.  There is inevitably a lot of laughter!

I COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT (PHYSICAL OBJECT)… My morning cup of coffee.  I sneak into the kitchen before anyone sees me and make myself a coffee.  I don’t want to speak to a soul before I start drinking it!

MY BIGGEST RISK…  I quit my dream job in Los Angeles, sold my house near the beach and moved 3000 miles to be with my husband in NYC.  We had been dating long distance for a few months and decided that it was either going to work or not.  He offered to come to me, which was reason enough for me to do the same! The rest is history.

MY BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT… I don’t want to say my children, because I don’t think of them as an accomplishment (especially on days when they test my patience!), although I do think they are the greatest part of me.  So I’m going to say the day I completed the Royal Parks half marathon in London. My whole life I believed I was terrible at sports.  At 39, I agreed to sign up for a half marathon to raise money for Tommy’s, a wonderful charity that funds research to save babies’ lives.  I started with 1km, and trained over 6 months.  On the actual day, I completed the race in a time I never believed was possible, 11 seconds shy of 2 hours.  I learned that my mind is so much stronger than my body, and accomplished something I never knew was possible.

MY BEST PIECE OF ADVICE…"Whatever you put your mind to you can accomplish."  My mother told me this when I was a little girl, and nothing has ever been more true, in all aspects of life. (see above running example!)

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE… I find this the most difficult question to answer! Of course I want to keep working hard to grow MyTwirl, but other than that, I don’t really have plans. I’m definitely someone who lives in the present.  Having my son taught me that things don’t always go as planned, so I want to enjoy what I have, and be flexible and adapt to whatever life throws my way.
