The Mum Club Featuring Mabel And Fox
L E A N N E B I R K E T T
Mama of 1. Owner of Mabel and Fox and lover of a majestic German shorthaired pointer named Otto.
MY NAME IS … Leanne Birkett
I LIVE IN… Colchester, Essex
I FEEL MOST AT HOME...With a cup of green tea in one hand, and interior magazine in the other, watching my daughter Mabel Fox running around with our dog Otto.
I AM A MUM AND… I'm obsessed with a neat and tidy house. Something that doesn't easily go hand in hand!
WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE AT NIGHT…surprising to it's not Mabel or Otto that keeps me awake, but my head being full of ideas on how to decorate my new house (we are moving in a couple of weeks). When we bought our current house I'd wake up in the middle of the night with some sort of inspiration, roll over to my husband who merely grunted at me. To be honest, it probably has something to do with my late night Pinterest activities, it's an unhealthy obsession.
I LOVE BEING A MUM BECAUSE...you get to see a mini person learn something new everyday. I love seeing aspects of myself and my Husband, Jack in her too. She's 15 months now and has such a little personality, it's amazing how animated and characterful they are at this age.
I WANTED TO BE WHEN I GREW UP…a sports psychologist. I used to train competitively in gymnastics and absolutely adored being active. I once saw a sports psychologist and found what they did amazing. However, after I quit the sport I ended up studying textiles and business and ended up going to university and studying Fashion.
WOULD YOU HAVE DONE ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY IN YOUR LABOUR… I wished I had of believed in myself more. I actually managed to get to 7cm without any pain relief, something I never thought I would be able to do. On reflection, I didn't need to be so scared and I sure as hell should have believed in myself more. If I am lucky enough to have another baby I certainly will have more confidence second time around. It really is impressive how much pain a woman can take! GO WOMEN!
HARDEST PART OF MOTHERHOOD…I love so many aspects of motherhood that I thought I would struggle with, but the one thing I can't get my head around is not having a full time job and earning a regular living. I worked for Arcadia in their head office talent team recruiting their designers which was absolutely amazing and right up my street. I loved making an impact on the business and seeing results. Don't get me wrong, being a mother is more challenging, busier, more important etc, but I really loved my job and it being MY thing. Hence why I decided to start my own business, so I could focus my creativity and business acumen into something and more importantly to have something that was all about ME.
WHATS YOUR THING THAT KEEPS YOU SANE...apart from wine!!! Whenever Mabel is having a funny half an hour (sometimes day!) I chuck her into the pram, grab the dog and I'm off. I could walk for miles. There really is something about the fresh air, a majestic German Shorthaired Pointer and a quiet child that calms me down and brings me back to reality. Also, it's time where I'm not having to worry about anything except pushing the pram and throwing the ball. I can clear my head, plan things, decide what to have for dinner that day without the day to day challenges of being a mother getting in the way.
I COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT (PHYSICAL OBJECT)...my Mabel and Fox changing mat and nappy clutch! Shameless plug I know, but since I have become a mother it is the best thing. If I pop into town, I simply grab my Whistles bag (no bulky ugly changing bag) which I can always fit a bottle and a couple of snacks in and slip my nappy clutch in the bottom of the pram and go! It saves rummaging around a massive changing bag for wipes, nappies and cream - it's all in once place - plus the metallic gold and pink print is pretty cool! I always use my changing mats on the go too, they are made with faux leather and so are wipeable and they don't stain.
YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE… Not really 'advice' as such, but a quote I am very fond of by Randall Core always feels me with positivity. 'She understood her worth which made her powerful. The world gravely needed a hero so she became one. No super powers really just a strong woman who took no shit from anyone.'
